The LA Times reported this week that Japanese auto supplier Takata Corporation has issued a recall of airbags installed in 34 million vehicles.
The NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION secretary Anthony Foxx reported that “lives are at stake” and that’s why the action is being taken.
The LA Times reports that investigators believe that the problem with the airbags rebates to “faulty fabrication of chemical – propellant wafers stacked inside the inflators.” It was further reported that this defect “can cause a medical canister in the airbag system to explode, spraying shrapnel into the passengers cabin.”
For more information and to check if your vehicle is included in this recall go to the the website created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at http://www.safercar.gov/rs/takata/index.html. It could take sometime for all recalled vehicles to show up on the database, so check the site in a few weeks as the list becomes complete.
