Predatory Teachers Who've Been Convicted in Ohio

Ohio has a number of laws pertaining to sexual predators and habitual sex offenders – and nearly as many predatory teachers who’ve made national news. Here’s just a sample.

High School Teacher Had Seven-Month Relationship with Student

In 2016, a 36-year-old teacher who'd worked for her school district for 15 years, was sentenced to seven days in jail for sleeping with a student between October 24 and May 2015. She faced a maximum of 20 years in prison for four counts of sexual battery.

The teacher admitted to having a sexual relationship with an 18 year old who reported her to his guidance counselor.

As the Columbus Dispatch reported, "State law prohibits teachers from having sex with students even if they are of legal age."

The teacher in this case lost her license and will have to register as a Tier 3 sex offender every 90 days for the rest of her life.

High School Science Teacher Supplied Marijuana, Alcohol, and Sex

In 2013, a 37-year-old woman who taught science for 10 years admitted to exchanging "inappropriate texts" with a student, according to USA Today. But police discovered she also asked a friend to chauffeur two 16-year-old boys to her home, where she gave them marijuana and alcohol and had sex with them.

A jury convicted her of one count of sexual battery.

"You were stupid and irresponsible," Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Norbert Nadel said before sentencing her to prison for two years. She faced a maximum of five years.

The single mother of an 8-year-old daughter begged the judge not to send her to prison before Christmas.

Despite Assistant Prosecutor Josh Berkowitz telling the judge that her daughter had been in the room beside hers when she had sex with a student, Judge Nadel allowed her to wait until mid-January to start serving her sentence.

She’ll have to register as a sex offender every 90 days.

Substitute Teacher Had Sex with Student

In 2012, a 25-year-old substitute teacher in Aurora was sentenced to two years in prison after being indicted on two felony counts of sexual battery. She faced up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

She admitted to having sexual relations with a 16-year-old student at least twice, according to Fox 8 Cleveland.

After being released from prison, she'll serve five years of probation and be classified as a Tier III sex offender. Consequently, she'll have to register with whatever county she lives in every 90 days for the rest of her life.

Gym and Health Teacher Had Sex with Five Students, Including Football Players

In 2011, a gym and health teacher was sentenced to four years in jail after being convicted of 16 counts of sexual battery and three counts of providing alcohol to minors. According to ABC News, the 33-year-old woman was arrested after an anonymous tipster said she provided alcohol and marijuana to students and had sex with them in her home.

Five former students testified that she'd been drinking before she gave the 17-year-old boys back massages.

"We all took our shirts off and she was just rubbing down our backs," one student said.

She pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Her lawyers blamed her vegan diet, antidepressants, irritable bowel syndrome, and alcohol blackouts.

The judge rendered his decision in 45 minutes.

Like the others, the former teacher will have to register as a sex offender every 90 days for the rest of her life.
